Las Posadas 2024
St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church Invites Community to Celebrate Las Posadas on Wednesday, December 18 at 6:30 PM
BATON ROUGE, LA — St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church invites the community to join in a vibrant and meaningful celebration of Las Posadas on Wednesday, December 18 at 6:30 PM, beginning in the church.
Las Posadas (Spanish for “the inns”) is a beloved Advent tradition originating in Mexico and observed in parts of Central and South America. This festive liturgy symbolizes Mary and Joseph’s difficult search for shelter on their way to Bethlehem, dramatizing the story that leads to the birth of Jesus.
St. Margaret’s La Mesa Ministry will host this special evening, weaving drama, prayer, and Latino culture into the Advent season. Participants will experience a prayerful procession, singing, and moments of reflection as Mary and Joseph are turned away repeatedly until finally being welcomed into a humble refuge. The celebration will conclude with a joyous fiesta, featuring traditional foods and the breaking of a seven-pointed piñata, symbolizing the triumph of good over sin.
“Advent and Christmas provides many opportunities to welcome the stranger and practice radical hospitality,” said the Rev. Tommy Dillon, Rector of St. Margaret’s. “This tradition invites us to open our hearts and doors to others, just as we would for Mary and Joseph.”
All are welcome to this family-friendly event. Come share in the music, culture, and joy of the season while preparing to welcome the birth of Christ.
